[[ooc: because I'm actually an honours year zoology student with a focus on taxonomy, this is where I do some speculating on Kaiju things given the work from canon

Given that Newt has 6 doctorates in canon, here's some theorising on what he's likely studied:
  • Biology - life sciences, likely zoology given how he works with Kaiju
  • Chemistry - studying most sciences involves, at least at the early levels, working in both chemistry and biology to understand the principles of it. K-Science Lab is biochemical and seeing as Hermann seems to deal with the maths and physics side, it makes sense that Newt is biology and chemistry.
  • Biomolecular sciences - this involves much more indepth DNA analyses and looking at proteins, cellular processes etc
  • Electrical engineering - Newt had an uncle involved in musical engineering who taught him the basics of electronics and given that he managed to make a Kaiju milking machine as well as put together something to drift with a Kaiju, it isn't too much of a stretch to think he did a degree on this (also MIT is about technology)
  • Biomedical sciences - again, given that Newt has pioneered research artificial tissue replication, this wouldn't be too much of a stretch to assume Newt has studied this as well
  • I don't want to get right into specific degrees but given what he can do in the film and novel and what his interests are stated to be in both + supplemental material, I'd hazard that these are areas he knows a great deal about although it's also stated that manga and monster movies combined with the knowledge from his uncle inspired his fascination with all areas of science and given that he collaborates primarily with Hermann (plus the fact that for all of these subjects you'd need knowledge in biology, chemistry, maths and physics + him being stated to be a genius) then it's safe to assume he knows a hell of a lot of shit.

Okay, that said, let me link dump and science ramble everywhere]]

RESEARCH REPORT—KAIJU SCIENCE

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Subject: Nature and possible vulnerability of Breach
Study of the bio-electromagnetic signature of the energies radiating from the Breach, as well as remote analysis of the Breach's physical structure, indicates a potential vulnerability.

The Breach requires the energy of Earth's tectonic activity to maintain cohesion. Though a powerful and persistent phenomenon, it is also fragile, existing both on Earth and in what we have called the Anteverse. It is believed that the Anteverse is another planet, and presumably some energy source there also contributes to the function of the Breach.

Harnessing the fundamental energies necessary to the creation of a passage such as the Breach—which essentially folds space-time around itself to bring two distant points into proximity—requires technology far beyond current human capabilities, as well as focused energies equivalent to the entire output of human civilization during the last century.

Destroying the Breach, however, is likely easier than creating one.

The universe fights against disruptions in its fabric. Our analysis suggests that a powerful release of energy inside the Breach itself would destabilize its structure. Once this destabilization took place, the fundamental equilibrium of space-time would forcibly reassert itself. In other words, the Breach would collapse, sealing Earth off from the Anteverse again. (A detailed mathematical analysis is attached to this executive summary; q.v.)

Required energies are easily available to the Pan-Pacific Defense Corps in the form of tactical nuclear weapons. Detonation of such a weapon inside the Breach is, per our mathematical analysis, more than 96% likely to collapse it permanently.

Kaiju Science recommends that this avenue of attack be pursued immediately and with all vigor.

SUBJECT

Kaiju “Onibaba” — Category II

Onibaba exited the Breach on May 15, 2016, with an estimated mass of 2040 tons. Visual surveillance suggested crab-like appearance, which was confirmed when Onibaba made landfall in Tokyo. Coyote Tango responded, with pilots Stacker Pentecost and Tamsin Sevier.

Onibaba displayed mixed behaviors, aggressive toward infrastructure but primarily defensive when confronted with active opposition. Striving to avoid a direct confrontation in the center of Tokyo against a dug-in and heavily armored Onibaba, Coyote Tango decoyed the kaiju to a less densely populated area, saving thousands of lives.

Like the crustaceans it apparently took its shape from, Onibaba was vulnerable along the underside of its exoskeleton. Postmortem analysis indicates its primary foreleg claws had a crush force of 50,000 psi. These measurements are confirmed by analysis of damage to Coyote Tango's cranial frame and Conn-Pod. Its cephalothorax was heavily armored and withstood both physical and energy assaults from Coyote Tango.

Kaiju Blue and other associated postmortem toxicity from Onibaba was moderate. Few of its organs could be recovered intact. Some other tissue and exoskeletal material was preserved for Kaiju Science use. Specific experimental results using these materials are noted in Kaiju Science reports.

NOTES

Onibaba was one of the first kaiju whose body was scavenged for black market uses. This practice has since become common. Onibaba's cranial exoskeleton, intact after death, was severed from the rest of the remains and relocated to the headlands of the Miuri Peninsula. PPDC contributed a Jumphawk to carry the head. A statement issued by the Japanese government said it stands as a “monument to the resilience of humanity and warning to our enemies.”

SUBJECT

Drift achieved with kaiju specimen

Kaiju Science co-director Dr. Newton Geiszler announces that he has successfully conducted a Drift with a portion of a kaiju brain. The event, conducted using a Pons of Dr. Geiszler's own creation, lasted nearly twenty minutes. During this period Dr. Geiszler observed a number of things about the origin of the kaiju. These findings are detailed elsewhere.

Most important from an operational standpoint are Dr. Geiszler's observations that the kaiju appear to be evolving along directed patterns. In other words, they are created organisms, designed for combat. They are organic fighting machines.

Dr. Gottlieb believes that if this is true, the kaiju will be demonstrating new innovations in armaments and tactics. In other words if they are a weapon, the creators of that weapon will be seeking to improve it.

The kaiju have thus far showed control over poison, acid, and a variety of unarmed combat situations. None of these routinely used combat abilities are unusual in predatory organisms. Observations in retrospect suggest that

certain kaiju are experiments in new ways of fighting. The repeated iterations on quicker hand-to-hand combat and control of acidic discharge suggest that the kaijus’ creators see these avenues as the most promising against their Jaeger opponents. Any other combat tactic that has seen success against Jaegers will in all probability be repeated because the kaijus’ DNA encodes the entire memory of the species, up to and including the last moment in the most recent kaiju's life.

For this reason, we expect to see more innovations in kaiju combat capability and tactics in the near future. After the hiatus of 2023 and the acceleration of 2024, this may be the year known for the kaiju reaching a threshold in understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the Jaegers deployed against them.

Dr. Geiszler's Drift with a kaiju brain was a landmark moment in the laboratory study of kaiju. It is also a significant advance in the area of neural overlay matrix technology, since all previous Pons structures had been designed with two humans in mind. What possibilities lie ahead for a Pons that can adapt its connection procedures to variations in brain structure on each side of the neural handshake?

SUBJECT

Kaiju DNA repetition among specimens

Dr. Newton Geiszler has conclusively demonstrated DNA repetition among different individual kaiju. Using multiple specimens from multiple organs and a number of different individuals, Dr. Geiszler discovered repeated DNA markers in all specimens. These repetitions occur in the same sequences, suggesting three (related) possibilities.

  1. The kaiju are manufactured
  2. Some of the repeated strands of DNA act as encoding mechanisms for a kind of species memory
  3. The kaiju passing through the Breach transmit their experiences on Earth back to the Anteverse

Dr. Hermann Gottlieb endorses Dr. Geiszler's conclusions.

Kaiju Science believes the kaiju are created weaponry. Given this troubling observation, it must be argued that we are in an arms race with the kaiju. The kaiju get larger and more powerful with successive generations (see attached chart plotting size against frequency of Breach openings). We expect that future kaiju will begin to demonstrate combat abilities we have not yet seen. Each kaiju, through the hive mind and DNA-based species memory it possesses, communicates its experiences to its creator up to and including the moment and manner of its death. (See Dr. Geiszler's report on his unprecedented Drift with a portion of a kaiju cerebrum.)

Our enemies are certainly intelligent and ruthless enough to make use of this information. We must confront the disturbing possibility that new kaiju will have built-in countermeasures to our standard combat protocols. Already we have seen them adapt their fighting practice to go after the Jaegers’ heads. They have learned that the Rangers inside are critical to the Jaegers’ function.

What will they learn next?

How will they put that new information into practice?

We cannot answer these questions. We hope that by asking them, we may assist combat assets in future kaiju encounters.

BIOGRAPHY

Born Berlin January 19, 1990. Only child. Parents musicians. Strongly influenced by uncle, musical engineer, who taught Geiszler the basics of electronics; also avid consumer of manga and monster movies. Combination of these influences and genius-level intellect led Geiszler to voracious interest in all sciences. Second youngest student admitted to Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Received six doctorates by 2015, taught MIT 2010-2016, pioneered research in artificial tissue replication. Joined PPDC 2016. Psychological profile indicates profound ambivalence toward kaiju resulting from conflict between childhood adoration of monsters and contemporary observation of kaiju attacks. Borderline manic personality, poor social skills. Has performed critical research leading to upgraded Jaeger armaments.

NOTES

Born Berlin January 19,Unorthodox approach causes chain-of-command issues; these are to be handled lightly due to Geiszler's outstanding record of research and reverse engineering Anteverse biotechnologies. Service file contains written complaints from Kaiju Science colleague Dr. Hermann Gottlieb regarding Geiszler's laboratory procedures, personal demeanor, taste in music, and other minor issues. Complaints deemed nonessential. No action is to be taken.

drift with the Kaiju

This satisfied him and it satisfied the Precursors

The word speared its way into Newt’s consciousness and he could not fight it off. Precursors that is not who is who is where did I get that word oh god the kaiju it’s talking to me

Looking down with mind cold and empty save for hunger to conquer, Precursors

Around them a city made of bone and flesh, bred and grown not built now dying as the world around them was dying he was one of them he was not one of them they realized they were being watched

From a sac surged a monster, slick with fluid it shambled forward the Precursor saw it and beckoned

Behind it the factory

Factory

Spread under a dying sky sacs and watchers and the churning pools from which they sprang

Like Mutavore but larger, it spread wings deformity thought the precursor dying the kaiju fell back into the bio-slurry and was absorbed another sac split and another kaiju rose from within like Mutavore but

arger, it spread wings

Mother never left the lake she fell in love there and

And died

Realization shattered the intensity of the Drift and for a moment Newt had clarity. Oh God, I understand

The kaiju died the first time around

The Precursor looked at him it looked at him and knew him they were ready this new world was ready for them they had waited a time for the world to prepare itself and now it had

They were coming now they were certain and they were coming

Pay you when we get back from tour

Another and another another another

Laughter of the Precursor from its bone belly roughened by brutal exhilaration of conquest the sound was bits and waves and

Newt

He was coming back. Was he coming back? Slowly.

was a brain Drifting in Lake Como below him fish burst from their sacs and

Newt

All those fish were probably dead from pollution acidification runoff pesticides estrogen mimics the world was dying Earth was dying, yes. But that other place, too... Their world was dying
